Liver Abscess

It is a less common complication as usually de-roofing of the cavity is done, although some authors have reported it up to the extent of 8% (Milicevic 2005). If it occurs, pus can be drained percutaneously under ultrasound guidance. Open drainage of pus is rarely needed.

Mortality

Mortality in hydatid disease could be due to an anaphylactic shock following traumatic rupture and hepatic failure due to cirrhosis. In the past, intraoperative formalin toxicity was one of the causes for mortality in these patients. However, formalin is no longer used now. The overall mortality rates vary from one series to another. Papadimitrio and Mandrakes (1970) reported a hospital mortality of 3.5%, and Christopher and Lopez (1970) reported mortality of 9%, while there was no mortality in a series reported by Belli et al. (1983).
